Why the home pathway can be a good option

At home, the dog remains in familiar territory beside trusted people, without travel, a waiting room or encounters with unfamiliar animals and people. For a dog whose triggers are linked to leaving home or entering a clinic, this can substantially reduce stress.

The early arrival and planned oral medication allow the process to unfold gradually, with less handling and restraint. In suitable cases, this can make a calm home goodbye possible even when the family previously thought it was not an option.

Why a clinic is usually safer

A clinic has additional staff, equipment and a controlled environment, so it is usually safer when there is a significant bite risk. However, transport and the clinic environment can themselves intensify fear and aggression. When the home pathway is suitable after a safety assessment, it can be a good, calm and respectful alternative.

Who the home pathway may suit

It may be especially helpful when travel, a carrier, a muzzle or encounters with unfamiliar people are likely to create greater stress and risk. Before booking, I ask about bite history, triggers, reactions to unfamiliar people, ability to eat, current medication, medical conditions and the home layout.

The plan is adapted to the individual dog and home. The aim is to work with minimal contact and no confrontation. If the assessment shows that the visit cannot be performed safely, we will consider a suitable alternative.

How the planned home pathway works

For a suitable case, I arrive about two and a half hours before the planned goodbye. Under a plan agreed in advance, the dog receives a combination of three prescribed oral medications with a small amount of food. Their purpose is to produce marked tiredness, weakness and calm and to reduce stress, handling and restraint.

Responses vary between dogs. After approximately two hours, and only if approaching and working safely is possible, an injection is given to continue sedation and anaesthesia. Deep anaesthesia with full loss of consciousness precedes euthanasia. If the effect is insufficient or the risk remains high, the procedure is not forced and the plan may need to change or move to a clinic.

Preparing the home

  • Keep children, visitors and other animals in a separate area
  • Choose a quiet room with a clear exit and no need to move the dog
  • Do not force a muzzle, crate or handling the dog is not accustomed to
  • Have a food the dog likes and can eat available, following the instructions provided
  • Do not give additional medication, leftover prescriptions or a different dose without explicit approval

Price and coordination

This pathway requires a longer visit, advance medication planning and additional equipment. The surcharge is approximately ₪900 above the standard home-farewell price. Suitability, the plan and the price are discussed before booking.

To ask whether it may fit, message that the dog is highly aggressive and include any bite history, the people or situations that trigger a reaction, approximate weight and whether the dog is still eating. Do not give anything before receiving individual instructions.
