Use clear words

You might say: their body stopped working, they died and they cannot come back. Avoid phrases such as went to sleep or went away, which can create confusion or fear around sleep and separation.

Match the child’s age

Young children may ask the same question repeatedly. Older children may want more detail or more privacy. A short honest answer is better than giving information they did not ask for.

Offer a real choice

A child might draw, write a letter, choose a photograph or attend part of the goodbye. They do not have to see the body or attend the procedure. Check their wishes again without pressure.
